Ricimer

Ricimer rose to supreme military command after the collapse of Valentinian III’s dynasty. Unable to claim the imperial office himself, he exercised power through emperors whom he supported, constrained or removed, including Majorian, Libius Severus and Anthemius.
Ian Hughes’s Patricians and Emperors places Ricimer at the centre of the western court’s final decades. The book follows his military successes, rivalries and repeated conflicts with emperors, using his career to explain how command of the army became more decisive than possession of the imperial title.
