Historical person

Majorian

c. 420–461

Majorian came to power with Ricimer’s support but pursued an unusually active programme of military recovery and administrative reform. He campaigned in Gaul and Hispania and assembled a fleet for the reconquest of Vandal North Africa, but the expedition failed after the ships were destroyed before sailing.

In Patricians and Emperors, Ian Hughes presents Majorian as one of the most capable late Western emperors and examines the breakdown of his alliance with Ricimer. His deposition and execution in 461 demonstrate the limits placed on emperors who lacked an independent military base.
