Philibert II, Duke of Savoy

Philibert succeeded as Duke of Savoy in 1497. He married Margaret of Austria in 1501, and their union gave her an influential place in Savoyard government before his death in 1504. Margaret later commemorated him through the royal monastery at Brou.

In historical fiction he is chiefly relevant to Margaret’s transition from dynastic princess to widowed political actor. His short reign and marriage should be treated within the wider tensions among France, Savoy and the Habsburg world.
