Oliver P. Smith

Oliver P. Smith was a United States Marine Corps general best known for commanding the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. A veteran staff officer of the Second World War, he took the division ashore at Inchon in September 1950 and then advanced into North Korea.

During the Chosin Reservoir campaign Smith prepared a chain of supply points and resisted pressure to advance too quickly, precautions that helped his surrounded division fight its way south after Chinese forces entered the war. He later became assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.

Jeff Shaara’s The Frozen Hours gives Oliver P. Smith the command-level perspective on the Chosin Reservoir campaign. Smith’s 1st Marine Division is stretched across exposed mountain positions when Chinese forces intervene in overwhelming strength, and his earlier caution about supply points and routes becomes crucial once the Marines are surrounded. Alongside front-line and Chinese viewpoints, the novel uses Smith to contrast disciplined withdrawal and logistical preparation with the strategic overconfidence that pushed United Nations forces too far into North Korea.
