Narcissa Prentiss sought missionary service but was initially rejected as an unmarried woman. Her marriage to physician Marcus Whitman enabled both to join a mission party travelling west in 1836, and her letters and diary recorded the overland route.
At Waiilatpu she taught, managed the mission household and endured the drowning of her only biological child. Relations with the Cayuse deteriorated as settler migration increased. She was killed with Marcus and others during the 1847 attack on the mission.
