Marcus Whitman trained as a physician and joined the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. After marrying Narcissa Prentiss, he travelled west in 1836 and established a mission at Waiilatpu near the Walla Walla River.
The mission became entangled with increasing settler migration and profound cultural conflict. During a measles epidemic in 1847, Cayuse families suffered catastrophic mortality, and a group killed the Whitmans and others after holding Marcus responsible for deaths among his patients.
