Historical person
Leonard Wood
1860–1927
Leonard Wood was a United States Army officer, physician and colonial administrator whose career spanned the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War and the early twentieth-century expansion of American overseas power.
He helped organise the Rough Riders with Theodore Roosevelt, later served as military governor of Cuba and governor-general of the Philippines, and became chief of staff of the United States Army. Wood was a leading architect of American military government and colonial policy in the Philippines and held overall authority during the Battle of Bud Dajo.
Kim A. Wagner’s Massacre in the Clouds reconstructs the assault on Bud Dajo in March 1906, when American troops attacked a fortified volcanic crater on Jolo in the southern Philippines during the Moro Rebellion. Wagner follows the decisions of Governor Leonard Wood and the military commanders on the ground, the presence of Moro families within the crater and the killing of hundreds of men, women and children, using a notorious photograph of the dead as a starting point for historical recovery.
