John Pope

John Pope was a career United States Army officer who became a Union major general during the Civil War. After successful operations in the Western Theater, including the capture of Island No. 10, he was brought east in 1862 to command the newly created Army of Virginia.

Pope’s campaign against Robert E. Lee ended in a severe defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862, where Stonewall Jackson held his attention while James Longstreet struck the Union flank. Pope was removed from eastern command soon afterward and later served in the Northwest, Missouri and the post-war army.
