Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland

Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland, was the legitimised daughter of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford. Through her marriage to Ralph Neville she became matriarch of a large and politically powerful family whose descendants included Cecily Neville, Edward IV and Richard III. After her husband’s death, disputes over inheritance divided the Neville children of his two marriages. Joan was also a significant religious patron and was buried beside her mother at Lincoln Cathedral.

Joan appears as a child and dynastic legacy in Anya Seton’s Katherine and in later Wars of the Roses fiction concerned with the Neville family. Novelists often use her lineage to explain the dense kinship linking Lancastrian and Yorkist claimants. Her own management of estates and inheritance shows that medieval noblewomen could shape politics long before their descendants reached the throne.
