Henry III of France

1551–1589

Henry III was king of France from 1574 to 1589 and the last Valois king. His reign was dominated by the Wars of Religion, conflict with the Catholic League and the succession crisis that brought Henry IV to power.

Henry III of France also held the offices or ranks of Grand Duke of Lithuania, King of Poland, and Duke of Anjou. Henry III of France belonged to the House of Valois and operated within Kingdom of France. Henry III of France was born in Palace of Fontainebleau and died in Château de Saint-Cloud.

In C. W. Gortner’s The Confessions of Catherine de Medici, Catherine de' Medici remembers an orphaned childhood in Florence, captivity during political revolt and an arranged marriage to the future Henry II of France.
