Haakon IV was king of Norway from 1217 to 1263 and brought a long period of civil war toward an end. His reign strengthened royal government, expanded overseas influence and marked a high point of medieval Norwegian power.
Haakon promoted law, diplomacy and court culture while asserting authority in the North Atlantic. He died in Orkney after a campaign against Scotland over control of the Hebrides.
