Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd was a Welsh princess, the daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan of Gwynedd and the wife of Gruffudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth. During the revolt against Norman rule in 1136, while her husband sought support, she raised forces and led them near Kidwelly. Her army was defeated, and Gwenllian was captured and killed. Her death became a powerful symbol of Welsh resistance and inspired continued fighting across the south.
Gwenllian appears in historical novels and fictional biographies that present her as a warrior princess, including Laurel A. Rockefeller’s Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd.
