Gaspard II de Coligny was admiral of France and one of the most prominent political and military leaders of the Huguenot cause.
Coligny became a Protestant leader during the French Wars of Religion and later regained influence at the court of Charles IX. An assassination attempt wounded him shortly after the royal wedding in August 1572. He was killed at the beginning of the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.
The City of Tears uses the attack on Coligny as the immediate trigger for the crisis confronting the Jouberts in Paris. His position links royal policy, Huguenot leadership and the Guise family’s demand for revenge.
