Charles IX was king of France during the first four French Wars of Religion and the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572.
Charles inherited the throne as a child and ruled under the strong influence of his mother, Catherine de’ Medici. His government alternated between attempts at religious compromise and renewed warfare. The decision-making behind the 1572 massacre remains debated, but royal orders enabled the killing to spread.
In The City of Tears, Charles’s court forms the centre of the political crisis surrounding his sister Margaret’s marriage and the attack on Admiral Coligny. The novel places the Jouberts near decisions whose consequences become mass violence.
