Esther

Esther is the Jewish heroine of the biblical Book of Esther, a narrative set at the court of the Persian king Ahasuerus. According to the story, she is an orphan raised by her cousin or guardian Mordecai and is selected to become queen after the removal of Vashti. Esther initially conceals her Jewish identity, but the rise of the royal official Haman and his plan to destroy the empire’s Jews forces her to decide whether to risk approaching the king without being summoned.

Esther exposes Haman’s plot through carefully staged banquets, and the king authorises measures that allow the Jews to defend themselves. The narrative provides the traditional explanation for the festival of Purim and has made Esther an enduring figure of courage, concealment and communal deliverance. Its precise historical relationship to the Achaemenid court remains debated: attempts to identify Ahasuerus and Esther with securely documented Persian individuals are uncertain, so the book is best treated as a biblical court narrative with a traditional Persian setting rather than a straightforward biography.
