Edward Seaga

Edward Seaga was a Jamaican politician and leader of the Jamaica Labour Party who served as prime minister from 1980 to 1989. He was a major figure in Jamaican public life for decades, combining political leadership with longstanding interests in the country’s music, culture and social institutions.

Seaga entered parliament in the 1950s and became one of the Jamaica Labour Party’s dominant figures, serving in several ministerial posts before becoming party leader. As prime minister he pursued closer relations with the United States and market-oriented economic policies during a period of severe debt, political violence and Cold War tension in the Caribbean. He remained active in public life and cultural institutions long after leaving office.
