Historical person
David Livingstone
1813–1873
David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary, physician and explorer whose journeys transformed European knowledge of central and southern Africa.
Livingstone campaigned against the slave trade and promoted commerce and Christian missions as alternatives. Although he died before the formal Scramble, his routes, writings and public reputation helped create the exploratory and missionary framework later used by imperial powers. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
