Crispus

c. 300–326

Crispus was Constantine the Great’s eldest son, born to Minervina before Constantine’s marriage to Fausta. He was educated by the Christian writer Lactantius and elevated to the rank of Caesar in 317. From Trier he held responsibility in the western provinces, campaigned successfully on the Rhine and became an important military partner in his father’s consolidation of power.

During Constantine’s final war with Licinius in 324, Crispus commanded the imperial fleet and won a decisive naval victory in the Hellespont. Two years later Constantine abruptly ordered his execution at Pola. Ancient accounts offer conflicting explanations for the crisis, often connecting it with Fausta, and the precise accusations and motives remain uncertain.

Crispus is a central historical character in Ian Ross’s The Mask of Command and Imperial Vengeance, where his military promise and dangerous position within Constantine’s dynasty become major elements of Aurelius Castus’s story.
