Cassie Hendricks Simpson

late 19th–early 20th century

Cassie Hendricks Simpson was a woman associated with the settlement history of the American West and with the family and community networks that developed around frontier towns and ranching districts.

Her surviving public record is comparatively slight, and much of what can be recovered comes through local history and family material rather than national political or institutional sources. Cassie Hendricks Simpson was the wife of Oregon coast entrepreneur Louis J. Simpson and a central historical figure behind A Gathering of Finches.

In Jane Kirkpatrick’s A Gathering of Finches, On the turn-of-the-century Oregon coast, the marriage of Cassie and Louis Simpson is observed through Cassie, her sister and an Indigenous servant whose position reveals the unequal world surrounding the household.
