Historical person

Alpín mac Echdach

Alpín mac Echdach is a shadowy early medieval ruler traditionally identified as the father of Kenneth MacAlpin. Later Scottish genealogies placed him among the kings of Dál Riata, although the surviving evidence for his life and reign is limited.

His historical importance rests chiefly on dynastic tradition. Through Kenneth, medieval chroniclers made Alpín an ancestor of the royal line associated with the emergence of the kingdom of Alba.
