Allan Breck Stewart was a Scottish soldier and Jacobite who became the principal suspect in the Appin Murder of 1752 and later lived in exile in France. His flight and the unresolved question of responsibility for the Appin Murder made him one of the best-known figures in the political aftermath of the 1745 Jacobite rising.
Kidnapped and Catriona turn Stewart into David Balfour’s adventurous companion and a defender of James Stewart of the Glen. Stewart was a real Jacobite soldier and suspect in the Appin Murder. Stevenson fictionalises his movements, friendship with David Balfour and direct witnessing of the shooting.
