Witwatersrand Gold Rush
1886–1899
Gold discoveries on the Witwatersrand in 1886 drew prospectors, labourers and capital into the South African Republic. Johannesburg expanded rapidly from a mining camp into an industrial city.
Deep-level mining required large companies, imported technology and a controlled labour force. The wealth of the Rand sharpened conflict between the Boer republic and British imperial interests.
