Battle of Blood River
16 December 1838
The Battle of Blood River took place on 16 December 1838 after the killing of Piet Retief and renewed conflict between Voortrekker groups and the Zulu kingdom. A fortified wagon laager under Andries Pretorius defeated a much larger Zulu force.
The battle became central to Afrikaner historical memory and was later interpreted through nationalist and religious narratives. It also formed one episode in a wider struggle over land, migration and political authority in southeastern Africa.
Marie brings fictional characters into the events surrounding Retief, Dingane and the violence that culminates at Blood River.
