Fin-de-Siècle France, 1871–1900

Fin-de-siècle France began after defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the violence of the Paris Commune. The Third Republic established a durable parliamentary system while railways, mass newspapers, department stores and expanding cities accelerated social and cultural change. Paris became an international centre of art, entertainment and publishing, but provincial France retained distinct local economies, religious traditions and political loyalties.

The period combined confidence in science and modernity with fascination for spiritualism, occult societies, new psychology and inherited folklore. Colonial expansion, class conflict, antisemitism and the Dreyfus Affair exposed deep divisions beneath the image later called the Belle Époque. Historical fiction can use the setting for artists, musicians, journalists, servants, investigators and families negotiating new freedoms and old hierarchies.
