European Finance, Espionage and Arms Competition
1867–1909
From the late 1860s, European banking houses and industrial companies operated across national borders, financing railways, mines, governments and expanding heavy industry. Corporate combinations and new securities allowed private financiers to control resources on a scale previously associated with states.
At the same time, military technology and naval construction became central to diplomatic rivalry. Arms manufacturers, banks, ministries and intelligence services exchanged information and influence, creating networks in which commercial decisions could affect alliances and strategic planning.
