Colonial Malay Archipelago

c. 1870–1914

The colonial Malay Archipelago was a maritime world of islands, river settlements and port cities divided principally between British and Dutch imperial influence. Singapore, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and neighbouring seas were connected by merchant shipping, plantation economies and regional migration.

European officials, traders and shipping companies operated alongside Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and Indigenous communities whose political authority and commercial networks did not disappear under colonial rule. Remote districts often remained only loosely controlled from colonial capitals.
