Hussite Prague and Women in War, 1419–1434

After Jan Hus was executed in 1415, demands for religious reform combined with political resistance to royal and ecclesiastical authority. The First Defenestration of Prague in 1419 helped trigger wars between Hussite factions and repeated crusading armies.

Women supported communities under siege, managed households and property, moved with armies and sometimes participated directly in defence. The evidence rarely preserves the private lives of individual non-elite women, leaving historical fiction substantial but carefully bounded room for reconstruction.

The Silver Sword places Anika O’Connor in fifteenth-century Prague, where her desire to fight and serve confronts both war and conventional gender roles. The setting supports the novel’s contrast between courage directed towards justice and violence driven by revenge.
