Siege of Jerusalem, 1099

The Siege of Jerusalem in 1099 was the culminating military operation of the First Crusade. After crossing Anatolia and Syria, a reduced crusader army reached the city in June without secure supplies of water, food or siege equipment. Timber brought from the coast allowed the construction of towers and other assault machinery.

The crusaders broke into Jerusalem on 15 July. Contemporary accounts describe extensive killing of Muslim and Jewish inhabitants, followed by the occupation of holy sites and the creation of a new Latin government. The victory fulfilled the expedition’s central religious objective while exposing the violence used to achieve it.

As a child of the First Crusade, this context provides the endpoint towards which the armies and pilgrims had travelled since 1096. Historical fiction can contrast redemption and devotion with massacre, exhaustion, political competition and the uncertain futures of survivors after the city was taken.
