Naval Battle
1217 CE
The Battle of Sandwich was fought in August 1217 off the Kent coast when English ships defeated a French fleet bringing reinforcements and supplies to Prince Louis. The battle came after the royalist victory at Lincoln and further weakened the invasion.
Sandwich mattered because control of the Channel was essential to Louis’s campaign. Once French reinforcement became unsafe, negotiation became more likely and the war moved toward settlement in favour of Henry III.
For fiction set in the First Barons’ War, Sandwich gives the conflict a maritime endpoint as important as the land fighting. It supports stories about supply lines, coastal warfare, invasion logistics, piracy, cross-Channel politics and the collapse of a foreign-backed claim to the English throne.
