Falklands War
1982
The Falklands War began in April 1982 when Argentine forces occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, territories claimed by Argentina and administered by Britain. The British government sent a naval task force across the South Atlantic to recover them.
The campaign combined carrier aviation, submarine warfare, amphibious landings and difficult ground operations in severe weather. Argentine forces surrendered at Port Stanley on 14 June after fighting that caused heavy losses on both sides.
The conflict transformed domestic politics in Britain and Argentina, ended the authority of Argentina’s military junta and left the sovereignty dispute unresolved. It also influenced later debates about naval power, expeditionary warfare and remembrance.
