The Story of Beatrix Potter

Sarah Gristwood’s illustrated biography follows Beatrix Potter from a restricted Victorian childhood to international success as an author and artist. It examines her close observation of animals, interest in natural science and development of the small-format books whose characters—including Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Squirrel Nutkin—combined precise drawing with unsentimental humour.

The book also traces the less familiar second half of Potter’s life. Financial independence from publishing allowed her to buy Hill Top, become a practical farmer and assemble land in the Lake District that she later left to the National Trust. Her relationships, business decisions and conservation work show how a sheltered daughter remade herself as an entrepreneur and land manager, leaving an environmental legacy as significant as her literary one.
