Lance Kilkenny wants no part in another range war, but violence around Lost Creek makes neutrality impossible. A stronger cattle interest is using intimidation to pressure people who lack the money and gunmen to resist, and Kilkenny’s attempt to remain outside the dispute ends when the conflict threatens those he believes should be protected.
His intervention draws him into the economics as well as the violence of the range. Water, grazing land and local influence determine who can remain in the country, while hired force is used to make the outcome look inevitable. Kilkenny has to uncover the interests behind the attacks before the valley settles its argument through bloodshed.
