The Red Patch Private

by Darrell Duthie Book 1 in the Archie Atwell WWII Historical Fiction Series series.

4.1(427)

July 1943. Canadian soldier Archie Atwell takes part in the invasion of Sicily, where heat, dust, mines and German resistance turn the Allied advance into a punishing campaign. The novel follows infantrymen through landings, marches and firefights while keeping close to the fears, friendships and practical burdens of men who must continue moving forward under fire. Duthie uses one soldier’s experience to place the larger Sicilian campaign at ground level.

The Sicilian campaign is often overshadowed by later fighting in Italy, but for Canadian units it was a demanding introduction to Mediterranean warfare. Mountain roads, defended villages and limited water slow the advance even after the beachhead is secure. Archie’s experience places strategy at the scale of the infantry section, where progress is measured in exhausted marches and the survival of familiar men.
