In May 1931, eleven-year-old Ren is serving a British doctor in the Federated Malay States when his dying former master gives him a final task: recover an amputated finger and bury it with the body within forty-nine days. Elsewhere in the Kinta Valley, Ji Lin works as a dressmaker’s apprentice and secretly as a dance-hall girl. A customer leaves her with a preserved finger, drawing her into a chain of unexplained deaths.
Ren’s search and Ji Lin’s investigation converge through hospitals, plantations, servants’ quarters and dance halls as rumours spread of a tiger capable of taking human form. The mystery combines Chinese numerology and Malayan weretiger lore with the social divisions of colonial society, using its supernatural pattern to examine gender, class, domestic violence, forbidden love and the ambitions of people expected to remain invisible.
