Period
1896–1941 CE
The Federated Malay States united Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang under a Resident-General in 1896. The Malay rulers retained authority over Islam and custom, but British officials increasingly coordinated finance, law, transport and economic policy across the four states.
Tin mining and rubber cultivation drew migrant labour and investment, while railways, hospitals, schools and expanding towns connected plantations and mining districts to the Straits ports. Colonial society remained sharply divided by race, occupation, wealth and legal status, even as urban professions and education created new ambitions.
This period is the appropriate specific setting for pre-war fiction in Perak and the Kinta Valley. The endpoint marks the Japanese invasion of Malaya, which suspended the colonial federation before its formal replacement after the war.
