Book
Taggart
First published 1959
Prospector Adam Stark has found a rich gold vein in the broken country near Rockinstraw Mountain and is working it secretly with his wife Consuelo and his sister Miriam. The isolated camp already faces danger from Apache raiders, but its internal tensions become more serious when Taggart arrives while fleeing a relentless bounty hunter.
Taggart’s presence unsettles the fragile arrangement. Consuelo, dissatisfied with the rough life Adam hopes the gold will eventually allow them to escape, is drawn to the stranger and begins testing loyalties that were already strained. At the same time, the men hunting Taggart bring outside violence towards a camp that cannot safely reveal its location. The novel combines pursuit, desire and the secrecy surrounding a mineral strike, showing how quickly isolation can turn a small group’s private resentments into a struggle for survival.
