Roman Briton

In AD 52 Caratacus has been captured and taken with his family to Rome. Expecting execution, he instead survives after his famous appearance before Emperor Claudius and begins an enforced life inside the imperial capital. His position becomes more dangerous as court politics change around Claudius, Agrippina and the young Nero, while Caratacus must decide how far a defeated British king can adapt without abandoning his identity.

The final novel in Boyle’s Caratacus trilogy moves from the battlefield to imperial politics and exile. Historical figures provide the framework, but the surviving record leaves large gaps in Caratacus’s later life; the novel uses those gaps for imaginative reconstruction, connecting his uncertain fate with the political and religious tensions of Julio-Claudian Rome.
