Red Sorghum

A later narrator reconstructs the violent history of his grandparents in Northeast Gaomi Township, where sorghum fields conceal lovers, bandits, distillers and guerrilla fighters. His grandfather, the charismatic Commander Yu, seizes control of a distillery and builds a rough local power base; his grandmother becomes the emotional centre of a family whose origins are entangled with desire, murder and rebellion against conventional authority.

In the late 1930s, Japanese invasion transforms local rivalries into a war of resistance. Commander Yu’s irregular fighters prepare an ambush while competing Chinese forces distrust and betray one another, and civilians are exposed to reprisals of extreme cruelty. Told through overlapping memories rather than a linear campaign narrative, the novel makes the red sorghum landscape a witness to love, family myth, collaboration and survival during the occupation of Shandong.
