In 1844 the Stevens–Murphy–Townsend Party attempts the first wagon crossing of the Sierra Nevada into California. A sudden snowstorm divides the emigrants, leaving women and children in a makeshift cabin while small groups seek a route, guard the wagons or struggle towards help.

The novel follows several women whose choices determine whether families survive separation, hunger and fear. Their Catholic faith does not remove danger, but it sustains cooperation and hope as the expedition learns that endurance depends on accepting sacrifice from people whose courage official histories often overlook.
