After his father’s death leaves the family impoverished, Nicholas Nickleby seeks help from his wealthy uncle Ralph, who sends him to work at Dotheboys Hall, a brutal Yorkshire school run by Wackford Squeers. Horrified by the neglect and violence inflicted on the pupils, Nicholas rebels and escapes with the abused boy Smike. He later joins a travelling theatrical company before returning to London to protect his mother and sister Kate from Ralph’s schemes.
The novel combines adventure, comedy and social criticism as Nicholas encounters predatory employers, exploitative schools and vulnerable families. His loyalty to Smike and Kate brings him into direct conflict with Ralph, whose pursuit of profit has destroyed his capacity for affection and responsibility.
