Bleak House

The long-running Chancery case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce draws together Esther Summerson, the wards Ada Clare and Richard Carstone, the generous John Jarndyce and a network of lawyers, creditors and expectant heirs. Richard becomes consumed by the possibility of an inheritance, while Esther’s uncertain parentage connects her to the aristocratic Lady Dedlock and to the lawyer Tulkinghorn’s dangerous investigation.

Dickens moves between Esther’s personal narrative and a wider view of London, linking drawing rooms, legal offices, charitable projects and extreme poverty. The novel attacks institutional delay and indifference, showing how the Court of Chancery, class privilege and careless philanthropy damage people who have little power to protect themselves.
