Milo Talon accepts a job to find a woman who has disappeared into the West, but the search quickly becomes more dangerous than a routine inquiry. People connected with her have died, hired gunmen are following the same trail and the stories Milo hears do not agree about why she vanished or who wants her found.
The investigation forces Milo to rely on observation, patience and his knowledge of frontier country rather than simple gunplay. Each new lead raises the possibility that the missing woman is part of a larger struggle over money and identity, leaving Milo to work out whether his employer has told him the truth before the men pursuing him close the distance.
