Allan joins her supporters, crosses difficult country and helps organise an assault on the fortified settlement where Maiwa’s enemies have concentrated their power.
The short novel turns a hunting expedition into a campaign of rescue and retribution. Its invented peoples and conflicts belong to Haggard’s colonial adventure world rather than to a documented war, but the setting draws on the mobility, firearms, trade and violent frontier encounters of nineteenth-century southern Africa.
