Bernard Samson is drawn into an investigation whose consequences reach through London Central and into the network of family and friends surrounding him. The apparent end of one Cold War operation has left unresolved deaths, hidden loyalties and competing versions of what senior officers authorised. Bernard’s instinct is to keep asking questions even when his superiors would prefer stability.
The novel deepens the domestic tensions running through the series. Fiona, Gloria, Werner and the Samson family are not separate from Bernard’s professional life; they are part of the same system of trust and obligation, making every new discovery both an intelligence problem and a personal threat.
