In 1864, eighteen-year-old Adair Colley lives with her family in the Missouri Ozarks, where neutrality offers little protection from guerrillas, militia and armies. Union troops destroy the Colley home and arrest her father, forcing Adair and her sisters onto the road. A betrayal then leads to Adair’s imprisonment in St Louis as an alleged Confederate collaborator.
Major William Neumann, assigned to interrogate the imprisoned women, comes to believe that Adair is neither a spy nor a willing participant in the conflict. Their growing attachment gives her an opportunity to escape, but freedom leaves her alone in a devastated countryside. Adair must cross war-torn Missouri in search of her family and the home that may no longer exist.
