Cities of the Plain

New Mexico, 1952. John Grady Cole and Billy Parham work as cowboys on a ranch threatened by military expansion near Alamogordo, sharing a life of horses, cattle and inherited skills that has little place in the postwar economy. Across the border in Ciudad Juárez, John Grady falls in love with Magdalena, a young woman controlled by the brothel owner Eduardo, and commits himself to bringing her to safety despite Billy’s fear that the plan will end in violence.

The final volume joins the protagonists of the first two novels and turns their friendship into the emotional centre of the trilogy. John Grady’s uncompromising idealism and Billy’s hard-earned caution confront a border economy built on exploitation, while the approaching loss of the ranch makes their private tragedy part of a wider disappearance of open-range work, horse culture and the old Southwest.
