The friendship carries Lucy and her family into a summer society built on inherited money, controlled marriages and strict distinctions between those who serve and those who belong.
Lucy’s growing attachment to a man above her station, Rowena’s resistance to an arranged match and Sofia Scarpelli’s dangerous romance create three different tests of judgement. The novel treats clothing as both disguise and creative independence, while faith presses each woman to reject shame, manipulation and social prejudice in favour of truth and sacrificial love.
