Cambridge in 1352 is divided by violent hostility between the university and the town. When a student is murdered during the unrest, Matthew Bartholomew tries to prevent the killing from becoming the excuse for a wider riot.
At the same time, newly discovered bones are proclaimed to be the remains of a local martyr, drawing crowds eager for protection against another outbreak of plague. Bartholomew doubts the relic's authenticity, and his attempt to establish the truth links the supposed saint to the student's death and to men prepared to exploit faith, fear and civic disorder.
