Tom Rob Smith is a British novelist, screenwriter and television producer whose work is characterised by tightly controlled suspense, moral ambiguity and an interest in people trapped within hostile political or social systems. Born in 1979 to an English father and Swedish mother, he studied English Literature at St John’s College, Cambridge, before beginning his writing career in television. He achieved international recognition with his debut novel, Child 44, which established him as a major writer of literary crime and historical thrillers. Smith has since worked across fiction and television, creating or writing dramas including London Spy, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and MotherFatherSon.

Smith’s principal historical fiction is the Leo Demidov trilogy, set in the Soviet Union and the wider Cold War world. Child 44 follows a former state-security officer investigating a series of child murders in Stalinist Russia, where the government’s ideological denial of ordinary crime makes the investigation itself politically dangerous. The Secret Speech continues Leo’s story during Nikita Khrushchev’s denunciation of Stalin and the unrest that followed, while Agent 6 moves between Moscow, New York and Afghanistan as Leo confronts the international consequences of Cold War espionage. Combining fictional mysteries with real political conditions, the trilogy examines state terror, surveillance, enforced conformity and the difficulty of preserving personal loyalty and moral independence under authoritarian rule.
