David C. Douglas

David C. Douglas (1898–1982) was a British medieval historian best known for his work on the Normans and the transformation of England following the Norman Conquest. He was Professor of History at the University of Bristol and later held appointments at Oxford and Cambridge. Douglas helped establish Norman history as a major field of modern medieval scholarship, examining not only the conquest of England in 1066 but also the political, ecclesiastical and cultural development of Normandy and the wider Norman world. His work combined close use of chronicles, charters and administrative records with a strong interest in the personalities and institutions that shaped eleventh- and twelfth-century Europe.

His most famous book is William the Conqueror: The Norman Impact Upon England, first published in 1964 and later incorporated into the Yale English Monarchs series. It presents William both as Duke of Normandy and King of England, examining his rise to power, the conquest of 1066 and the profound political and social changes that followed. Douglas also wrote The Normans, The Norman Achievement, 1050–1100 and The Norman Fate, 1100–1154, which together explore the expansion and consolidation of Norman power across Europe. He also co-edited the important documentary collection English Historical Documents, 1042–1189. Douglas’s work remains particularly valuable for understanding William the Conqueror, the Norman Conquest and the creation of Anglo-Norman England.
